SCREENSHOT / SEPTEMBER 2026

Marginalia Search deliberately favours small, text-heavy and independent websites over the pages that dominate conventional search results. It is one of the clearest ways to look beyond the commercial web without relying on a random-site button.

What it does

The engine maintains its own index and offers controls for filtering by topic, file type, popularity and site characteristics. Results often look less polished than mainstream search, but they lead to pages with a much stronger sense of authorship.

Why it belongs here

Marginalia changes what counts as a good result. A personal essay, old technical note or hand-built reference page can surface because it matches the query, not because its publisher won a distribution contest.

How to use it

Start with a concrete subject, then try the Explore and Sites views when you find a promising corner. Broad consumer queries are not its strength; specific curiosities are.

Things to know

  • Its index is much smaller than a mainstream search engine.
  • Results can be old, eccentric or technically rough.
  • It is best used alongside—not instead of—general search.
